Telling Real Craft From a Convincing Copy
The market for high-end footwear is crowded with imitations, and telling a genuine article from a mass-produced copy has become a real skill. Quality shows itself in the character of the material and the human touch in the finishing, not in loud logos.
At VVID we work in small, deliberate runs. Each pair of the Croco Edition is built from cowhide finished with a hand-applied crocodile emboss, giving it a texture and depth that printed synthetics cannot replicate.

What defines quiet luxury at VVID is intentionality, where the hand-finished detail matters more than overt branding. Distinction is expressed through texture, precision, and how a pair performs day after day. Drawing on traditional Indian craftsmanship, we build contemporary silhouettes that favour substance over seasonal trends.
The Signature of Indian Artisan Craftsmanship
Our process prioritises careful manual handling of every component. Artisans apply hand-finishing techniques to the leather, placing every stitch and perforation with care. Hand assembly allows correction during construction and a level of individual attention that high-speed lines do not permit.
Leather Grades and the Croco Emboss
Quality footwear begins with the material, and it helps to know how leather is graded so you can judge any pair you are considering.

The Croco Edition uses croco-embossed cowhide at 1.1 to 1.3 mm. As the table shows, embossed leather sits in the corrected-and-finished category, because a pattern needs an even surface to hold. That is what gives the emerald upper its scaled texture, and it is why we do not describe it as full-grain.
The pattern is an emboss. It is not exotic crocodile skin, and no protected species are used in any VVID product.
Judging by Touch and Smell
Where low-grade synthetics feel stiff, cold, and uniform, leather has a supple hand and subtle organic variance. Counterfeits often rely on cheap adhesives that give off a harsh chemical smell, while genuine hide carries an earthier character. Leather warms to the touch and softens with wear; synthetic composites stay static.
What to Look For
Check stitching for even tension and clean alignment. Look at a cut edge: real leather shows a solid, fibrous cross-section, while bonded or heavily coated materials look layered or crumbly. Counterfeits often use lower-grade dyes that read flat. Ask for the upper thickness in millimetres, and ask what the finish is. A brand that knows its supply chain can answer both.
Limited Production
Keeping output small gives our artisans time to finish every pair with care. The Croco Edition first batch is limited to 240 pairs. Our suede models, KOHL and DEODAR, run to 40 pairs each, 8 in every size from UK 6 to UK 10.
Caring for a Pair
Cedar shoe trees help hold shape and absorb moisture, and a soft, dry cloth keeps the surface clean. On embossed leather, work with the grain of the pattern rather than scrubbing across it, since the recessed areas trap dust. Condition sparingly; heavy waxes pool in the emboss and dull the texture.
